2024/25 Season Review

t: Mike is joined by Claire, Dan, Andrew and Joe to reflect on Sutton United's 2024/25 campaign. From highs and lows to standout players and what's needed next, it's a heartfelt and honest end-of-season roundup.

"Let’s look at the stats to cheer ourselves up."

That quote from Joe probably sums up the tone of this end-of-season chat. The Sutton United Talk Time on Podcast crew gathered for one final episode of the 2024/25 campaign, and while the mood was part-reflective and part-resigned, there was plenty to celebrate too. Mike was joined by regulars Claire, Dan, Andrew and Joe as they unpicked a season that delivered both growth and grey hairs.

A Mid-Table Finish with More Than Meets the Eye

On paper, Sutton United ended up slap bang in the middle of the National League, eight points off the play-offs and eight off relegation. "Consistent at being inconsistent," as one fan described it. But as Mike cheekily pointed out, that actually makes it our 10th best finish of all time. Cue the sighs, eye-rolls, and yes, the merch ideas: "Dan Made Me Sad" and "Let’s Look at the Stats to Cheer Ourselves Up."

Expectations vs Reality

The group compared their pre-season hopes to how things actually unfolded. Andrew had hoped for a play-off push; Dan would have settled for top 10; Claire just wanted stability; and Joe, well, he went big with a prediction of 6th. While no one was furious with how it played out, everyone agreed the inconsistency and injury issues derailed any real momentum.

Highlights, Lowlights and "Meh" Moments

The win away at York stood out as a benchmark performance, while the Spennymoor semi-final heartbreak still stung. Some of the best moments happened off the pitch, with Claire highlighting community work and fan initiatives. And of course, there were a fair few matches that everyone struggled to even remember.

The Youth Model and Future Moves

With players like Sim, Simpa, Davis, and Taylor impressing, the conversation shifted to Sutton's increasing focus on youth. There was optimism about developing talent, even if it means becoming a 'selling club.' As Claire put it, "If we become a bit of a springboard for young talent, then great." That said, the need for a few experienced heads to guide the youngsters was a consistent theme.

Final Reflections & Looking Ahead

So, what do we take from all this?

  1. Inconsistency was the theme – But so was resilience.

  2. The youth strategy is working – We’re building something.

  3. Mid-table isn’t failure – It’s a foundation.

There’s already buzz about next season. With a few smart signings and some luck on the injury front, we might be on to something special.
