Back in the Day with Jenny

"One day... we are going to give someone a real tonking'."

If there’s one thing Sutton United fans know, it’s that football is never straightforward. In this episode of Sutton United Talk Time on Podcast, I sat down with Jenny to chat about Sutton’s 1-1 draw at Solihull Moors, reflect on classic matches from the past, and look ahead to the upcoming fixture at Maidenhead United.

A Draw That Felt Like a Loss

You’d be forgiven for thinking Sutton lost to Solihull given the reaction among the fans. As Jenny pointed out, everyone was moaning like we’d come away with nothing, despite it technically being a point on the road. The frustration stemmed from a promising start—Vaz put Sutton ahead early, thanks to a great run and cross from Dillon—but that joy was short-lived as a defensive lapse allowed Solihull to grab an equaliser.

Despite controlling large parts of the game, Sutton couldn’t find a way past a goalkeeper having, in Jenny’s words, "a worldie." It was the classic tale of a match that could have—should have—been won.

The Dillon Show

One big positive? Dillon’s performance. He was a constant menace down the wing, taking on defenders and causing havoc for Solihull’s backline. Jenny didn’t hesitate to call him her man of the match, and even opposition players resorted to fouling him repeatedly—so much so that Reece Hall-Johnson eventually picked up a booking late on. Had he been booked earlier, we could have seen even more joy down the flank.

But, as Jenny highlighted, there was a moment after the equaliser where it seemed like Sutton lost a bit of confidence. Instead of continuing to drive forward, there was a cautiousness, a hesitancy—perhaps stemming from that psychological weight of recent results.

Refereeing Frustrations

It wouldn’t be a Sutton Podcast episode without a referee debate, would it? Jenny was particularly unimpressed by the referee’s inconsistency, especially his habit of stopping Sutton from taking quick free kicks—something that allowed Solihull time to reset defensively.

Then there was the penalty shout. While some decisions are 50/50, this one looked like a stonewall penalty in real-time, yet Sutton once again found themselves on the wrong end of a referee’s call. As Jenny put it, "We don’t seem to get penalties. Simple as that."

Looking Ahead to Maidenhead

Next up: Maidenhead United, a team with the worst defensive record in the league. Sounds like the perfect chance for Sutton to finally dish out that long-awaited hammering, right? Well, not so fast. As Jenny reminded us, Maidenhead has been one of Sutton’s bogey grounds over the years, meaning fans are still cautious about getting too optimistic.

That being said, Jenny is backing the team to break the cycle with a 3-0 win. I went for a more conservative 2-1. Either way, we need to see that killer instinct after scoring—too often, we take the lead and then sit back, rather than pushing forward and grabbing a second. If Sutton can keep up their attacking intensity, there’s no reason they can’t walk away with all three points.

A Walk Down Memory Lane

The episode wasn’t all about recent results, though. Jenny took us back in the day with some brilliant recollections of classic Sutton matches. She picked two games she’d love to rewatch for the first time:

  1. The 1970 FA Cup win against Hillingdon Borough, which set up the famous tie against Leeds United. Jenny remembers standing with her dad, soaking in the atmosphere, though the details of the match itself are a bit hazy.

  2. The 2-1 Valentine’s Day victory over Swindon, a match she had waited forever to see Sutton win. That late winner and the celebrations in the stands made it an unforgettable night.

It’s always great to mix the past with the present, and Jenny’s trip down memory lane was a reminder of how much football is about moments—those you remember forever, and those you wish you could relive all over again.

Final Thoughts

  • Biggest Takeaway? Sutton need to maintain confidence and intensity after scoring.

  • Refereeing Woes? We’re still waiting for our fair share of decisions.

  • Next Match? Maidenhead could be the perfect opportunity to get a big win—if Sutton take their chances.

  • Throwback Nostalgia? Jenny’s match picks show how special Sutton’s history really is.

Will Saturday be the day we finally give someone a real tonking’? Fingers crossed.
