Mike Dowling
00:01 - 00:45

Mike Dowling
00:46 - 01:01
On to all social medias at Sutton Podcast, the likes, shares and comments really do mean a lot to me and thank you to everyone who does it on a regular basis. George, we found out exactly 45 seconds ago you were flying solo today, how have you been?
Speaker 2
01:02 - 01:05
Yeah, I've been good on half term, so it's all been good.
Mike Dowling
01:05 - 01:08
Excellent, excellent. It's only a week, so you're back on Monday. Yeah, so
Speaker 2
01:08 - 01:09
I'm back tomorrow. Exactly,
Mike Dowling
01:09 - 01:52
yeah. Right, so we did the Knowing Me, Knowing You question. I sent it earlier, and it's just going to come in right now. One second. So the question was, what changes or improvements would you like to see at the club in the next few years? So this can be quite wide ranging. It's a very sort of flaky question. You can go on the pitch, off the pitch, whatever you like. So what kind of changes would you like to see at the club in the next few years? They're not going to reduce the age of drinking.
Mike Dowling
01:52 - 01:54
Just put that out there for you quickly.
Speaker 2
01:56 - 02:01
This is like incredibly random, like super weird. So it's about the burgers.
Mike Dowling
02:02 - 02:02
I
Speaker 2
02:02 - 02:07
would like to see the buns change, because at the moment I'm thinking it's more bread than burger.
Mike Dowling
02:11 - 02:49
You're not the only person to mention the food. Yeah, the buns, yeah. Also in wintertime, when they're out on the counter, it kind of, it makes the bun frozen by the time you actually get to eat the burger again. But yeah, okay, so the bun's changing. That would be a fairly achievable one, I should imagine. When you said it was gonna be random, I thought, oh, here we go, 90,000 seat at a stadium or something, but no, changing the buns. So we'll get some people thinking on that and working on that. But let us know what your thoughts are, what changes or improvements would you like to see at the club over the next few years?
Mike Dowling
02:51 - 03:25
It could be like Joe, go back to a burger that he had, I think he said at Brentford, this big massive burger, he was dreaming of it for days afterwards. But let us know what your thoughts are, share your thoughts at Sutton Podcast, tag me on socials and we'll see what changes we can get going. I've been a bit busy today, so I haven't really looked and dug around for the club news. The ladies took the lead twice, but ended up losing 3-2 today to Dorking. And news on the Sutton fan who collapsed yesterday, he was all well and good.
Mike Dowling
03:25 - 03:59
I think he'd collapsed, hit his head, so they were a bit worried, but he was up in the ambulance trying to argue his case not to go to hospital. But I think he was taken, but then given the all clear. So I've been told he's home. He won't be around on Tuesday, but he should be back on Sunday. So that's very good news. Podcast news is a bit of an ego one. about two or three people that came up to me yesterday and said how much they were enjoying the podcast. I mean, I did apologize and checked on their mental health, but in truth, it is really nice to hear.
Mike Dowling
03:59 - 04:27
And I did kind of get very embarrassed and run away because most of this is just an act. But yeah, I'm glad to hear that people are enjoying it. If you are, let me know as well, because yeah, sometimes it's quite lonely. Lonely thing talking out. But very quickly, on to the game. So, what were your thoughts ahead of the match? What were your thoughts on the lineup? And what was your expectation of how the match was going to go?
Speaker 2
04:29 - 04:50
Well, after, because I went to Bointree away in October, maybe. I didn't think they were all that, I didn't think they were that special. So I was expecting us to win it. It's not like me, I'm a bit optimistic. And then when I saw the line-up, I was really happy because I love Nader, Sam, Coley and Davey starting up front together.
Mike Dowling
04:54 - 05:35
Yeah, so you had full expectation of a win. I think I was hoping for a big, nice goal fest at 3-2. Didn't quite work like that. I mean, first sort of 15 minutes or so were quite bright, but the first half wasn't exactly memorable. I'm just picking out parts at random, so this isn't kind of going in any particular order, but Josh's goal. He very kindly waited until 10 minutes after halftime, so knowing that I'd be out of the bar by that point, so that's good. What a finish, first of all. Did you think it was offside?
Mike Dowling
05:36 - 05:41
There's been talk of it being offside because he was ahead of the defender and Will's header.
Speaker 2
05:46 - 06:00
Well, I stand behind the goal, so it's a bit hard to see and I'm not going to lie, I haven't watched it back. But at the time, I'm obviously biased. I didn't think it was offside. But to be honest, it probably didn't. But from where I was standing, it looked like it came off the defender.
Mike Dowling
06:01 - 06:30
Well, I thought at the time, that looks a bit off. One of the defenders was really, really going for it. And I was like, he seems to be very cross about it. And I watched it back and I was like, again, I was like, oh, I think that might've been offside, you know. Then the club put the socials out and it was kind of cropped and I thought, right, that is definitely, definitely offside. But then Frankie on the forum had said that Davis didn't actually touch the ball. He went for the header. Yeah,
Speaker 2
06:30 - 06:32
it looked like the defender touched it from where I was
Mike Dowling
06:32 - 07:06
standing. I don't think anyone touched it. I think what he's saying is he went for the header, missed it, so therefore the ball came directly from Jack Simms. So, going from Jack, it kind of bounced and then Josh lifted it over the keeper. So, whilst it, yes, he was possibly in an offside position, had Will got his head onto it, it wasn't. So, Jack Simms for the assist. Sure, he'll claim that. But I mean, the finish itself was very clever, very, very, very spectacular. What were you kind of feeling at that point?
Speaker 2
07:08 - 07:16
The finish was almost perfect. You couldn't get much better than that. I was just hoping that we'd go on and get a second and just kill the game off after what we've done recently.
Mike Dowling
07:18 - 07:44
Yeah, that does seem to be a little bit of an Achilles heel at the moment. It happens quite often. One of the cliches in football is you're never more defensively at risk as when you've just scored. It was almost very, well, short-lived anyway, and they then got a goal. I know, well, for you, what was their goal like? I
Speaker 2
07:46 - 07:56
can't remember. lost the ball when we were attacking. They played a long ball to their big striker and he took it past Sims and put it in an open net. It looked
Mike Dowling
07:56 - 07:56
a
Speaker 2
07:56 - 07:57
pretty simple goal to score.
Mike Dowling
07:58 - 08:26
Well, I've seen some criticism of Jack, where, why was he doing so far out of goal? he's that far out of goal all the time. And I mean, what, 99 times out of 100, he's there to sweep it up and the rest of this time it didn't work out. But yeah, I mean, frustrating at that point for a sort of defensive error. And then they kind of got on top for a little while. Were you worried at that point?
Speaker 2
08:26 - 08:29
Yeah, to be honest, at that point, I thought we were going to go on and lose the game.
Mike Dowling
08:30 - 08:30
Yeah.
Speaker 2
08:30 - 08:51
Because they just, up until like, After they scored to 80-ish minutes, I think they were the better side on the top wall. They were putting balls in the box and there were so many big players and we're not that good early. I thought one of them was just going to find a way in.
Mike Dowling
08:53 - 09:05
Yeah, I mean, there was, I mean, there's a couple of bits. I mean, midfield, there's some good battles going on and, I mean, Finlay got man of the match on his return. Finlay's
Speaker 3
09:05 - 09:05
amazing.
Mike Dowling
09:06 - 09:35
Yeah. Yeah. Good pressing, lots of running. Apparently, I mean, you were at the talk the other night, weren't you? Yeah, yeah. One of the players that keeps saying, what do I need to do? How can I improve? How can I improve? Which is great to see from a younger player. But I mean, there were early opportunities. But do you feel, on reflection, although we wanted to win the game, do you feel on reflection the draw was probably about right? Or do you feel we still should have won it?
Speaker 2
09:37 - 09:45
Like, as in, like, when the game, like, during the game, I think a draw was a fair result. But before the game, I would have expected us to win that game.
Mike Dowling
09:46 - 10:04
Yeah, absolutely. No easy game. You can't just sit and go, oh, yeah, we should have this. I mean, towards the end, There was a red card. Did you see the incident? Because I didn't really see it. I've watched it back. I didn't really see it.
Speaker 2
10:06 - 10:23
I didn't see even, I didn't even see him pull the card out. I just saw there was like a bit of like, a little bit of a fight. And then my mate who was standing down the other end told me that he elbowed him in the face. I haven't watched it back. I don't know if it actually happened. But if he'd done that, that is a red card, I guess.
Mike Dowling
10:24 - 10:54
Yeah, I think what happened from watching it back, and obviously it's a distance, you can't really see, I think there was a bit of pulling and it kind of beaten the man, then the guy pulled him down. and as he's gone down, he's kind of flicked his arms out. I'm not going to suggest for a second he deliberately went to hit him in the face. I'm not saying he didn't, but I'm not saying he went deliberately. It was one of those where he sort of lashed out on the floor in anger and the guy's face was there.
Mike Dowling
10:56 - 11:10
Or at least he was holding his value. So again, you can't quite make it out. But yeah, it's actually our first red card. I'm not, I didn't check back, but I think it might be the first red we've had under Steve as well. I don't know.
Speaker 2
11:10 - 11:14
Yeah, it probably is. Which is funny because this season we've got the second most amount of yellow cards in the league.
Mike Dowling
11:15 - 11:37
Yeah, we tend to get yellow cards fairly early and quickly, but the players have got, for a lot of comments from people saying they don't have discipline, when they get a yellow card, they tend to be very, very disciplined. But what do you think we needed more yesterday that we could have done that we weren't doing?
Speaker 2
11:39 - 11:45
After we scored, I think we needed an experienced head, like even like just Woodyard to come on, just someone to calm the game down.
Mike Dowling
11:47 - 11:49
To hold
Speaker 2
11:49 - 11:49
a lead?
Mike Dowling
11:50 - 11:59
Yeah, I mean, at the point we scored, I would have said, right, we're going to get two or three here. We
Speaker 2
11:59 - 12:02
came out in the second half like a house on fire, it was
Mike Dowling
12:02 - 12:41
amazing. Yeah, I just think that If we had done that, there would have been a lot of criticism of why we've gone so defensive. It's only 1-0. Again, I pay to watch football, so I'm not going to pretend I know enough about it. But yeah, I mean, it's just difficult. Obviously you heard the thing off the gate said that a lot of players were still ill. Yeah. And that's, that's going to affect the recovery. So you don't know how, we don't know how much training people have had. Um, and also that's two, two long trips in a week.
Mike Dowling
12:42 - 12:57
Just over a thousand miles, I think someone said in a week. So that's going to obviously have an effect on legs. I mean, it wasn't overly noticeable. I'm not saying that you could tell they were leggy, but, it's just going to have that little bit of effect. But what about Jack Taylor? I
Speaker 2
12:58 - 13:04
think Jack Taylor's been one of, if not our best player since he was returned. He was so good yesterday.
Mike Dowling
13:05 - 13:07
Yeah, and especially as he was one of the ones that missed out
Speaker 2
13:07 - 13:08
Yeah.
Mike Dowling
13:08 - 13:09
Midweek. He's
Speaker 2
13:09 - 13:10
amazing.
Mike Dowling
13:10 - 13:18
Yeah. Yeah. There was a moment, I think in... Was it in the first half? Where he just shepherded someone out. Yeah, yeah.
Speaker 2
13:18 - 13:21
That was very funny. He just outpaced him and got in front of the ball.
Mike Dowling
13:22 - 14:01
Yeah. Just like, really, really good boy. Yeah. So, where do you think this is going to leave us? I mean, playoffs aren't gone. probably gone, but they're not gone. We've got something like, I think we've got 13 games left, which is 39 points. Yeah, it's 39 points. Not possible doesn't, yeah, not probable doesn't mean not possible. But do you think we've probably missed the playoffs now? And is it top 10 should be our aim?
Speaker 2
14:03 - 14:10
I think, if I'm honest, I think we've missed the playoffs. I think we should aim for, like, top half and FA Trophy, if I'm honest.
Mike Dowling
14:11 - 14:49
Mm-hmm. Yeah. I mean, getting to Wembley, let's jump ahead and be really, really positive and winning. in his first full season. So I guess he came in halfway through last season, but his first full season. Would that meet the criteria to put Steve on one of the top managers in Sutton's history? Because Matt got promoted after two seasons and he's in the Hall of Fame and we've never, ever won at Wembley. Would you, obviously I'm not going to put jinx on it, but if, if, if, yeah, would you,
Speaker 2
14:49 - 14:50
yeah,
Mike Dowling
14:51 - 14:51
an awful lot of ifs.
Speaker 2
14:52 - 14:57
I think it's too early.
Mike Dowling
14:57 - 15:36
Too early, all right, fair dues, fair dues. Yeah, I think we need to aim top 10. Yes, I still, I'm always gonna be optimistic and say there's an outside chance at those playoffs. There's an outside chance we could do it, but yeah, top 10. Obviously, I'm getting on the bandwagon for the National League Cup because we're in the quarterfinals now, but that may end very soon. But would you, how do you feel about that competition? Because obviously a lot of the older guys I speak to, we're all like, nah, I'm not that bothered about it.
Mike Dowling
15:36 - 15:41
But how do you feel about it? You're not talking to all youth, you're for all youth, you're talking for yourself.
Speaker 2
15:42 - 15:55
I don't know. I go to the games because I just like watching football. I'm not going to boycott them. But I don't like it, to be honest. I find, I think it's a waste of our time. And like, there's not much point in it.
Mike Dowling
15:56 - 15:58
Yeah I mean for me
Speaker 2
15:58 - 16:05
it's like 500 fans of the games it seems a bit useless.
Mike Dowling
16:06 - 16:43
Exactly I think that as well I mean it's I think with the draw we've got we could potentially have a good crowd and maybe make a profit from the competition overall. But yeah, I'm not, obviously if we win it, it's gonna be the greatest competition on earth, but no, it's always been great. But what I'm gonna do is, we're rattling through very quickly, but we're gonna talk about the points of use. There was only one, but there's a jingle. It's
Speaker 4
16:43 - 16:59
time to have your say What's good, bad, okay On the pitch or not We'll talk about the lot Your thoughts, your views On the latest news It's your points of views
Mike Dowling
17:03 - 17:43
Honestly, it is only 20 seconds. It feels like longer, but it is only 20 seconds. So it was Andrew Jackson who has said, it was another one of the frustrating days. Short passing was good, but longer passing was often a bit wayward. We might have been caught a bit easily on the break from which the goal was conceded, and we need to be creating more decent chances. which kind of goes against the whole, we were creating chances before and just not scoring them, now we're not creating a huge amount. Maybe the press was a little bit lackluster yesterday, which may be the fitness thing, but positive, another point in the books.
Mike Dowling
17:44 - 17:46
Any of that you'd agree with or disagree with?
Speaker 2
17:49 - 17:54
I don't know if a point against a team fighting for relegation is a positive thing.
Mike Dowling
17:56 - 18:40
We didn't lose. If you don't win, you have to lose. We didn't win. Yeah. But yeah, so to be fair, 1-1 draw is not a lot anyone can ever say about it. Yeah. It was a strange atmosphere because I kind of was doing my little silly video thing. I was really down. I was like, No, we didn't actually lose the game. I know it feels like we've lost, but we didn't actually lose the game. It did feel very flat and very like, ugh, but we didn't actually lose. One very important point after the match is the little group of podcast supporters who joined together for the syndicate for the Strike is the Key, our number was drawn out.
Mike Dowling
18:40 - 19:22
We had a chance of winning £1,750. We didn't. We got 51. But we had a chance. It's all Jay arsehole. He didn't pick the right key. Okay. And we're actually going to wrap up. We're yesterday already. So, we are rattling. But it's the good, the bad, and the funny. So, all the pressure's on you. You're not going to have a lot of thinking time between them. But I'll give you a few more seconds. I forgot to change into that. What was good about the day? Doesn't have to be on the pitch, could be any of it.
Mike Dowling
19:23 - 19:25
You weren't in hospitality, so you didn't see my interview, so you can't count that.
Speaker 2
19:26 - 19:32
The good, I mean, I had an English breakfast before, that was nice.
Mike Dowling
19:32 - 19:33
Ooh, where was that?
Speaker 2
19:34 - 19:36
It was at a golf club near my house.
Mike Dowling
19:37 - 19:51
Ooh, very nice. Yeah, very nice. Is that every week, or is that not a special case? okay if we don't win when you do it though you might not be able to do that anymore you know i'm very very superstitious
Speaker 2
19:51 - 19:53
well we've never won when i've been on the podcast
Mike Dowling
19:55 - 20:15
right okay that's a good note to make a note of for next time that's the anti-alex alex has always won when he's been on the podcast we'll get you and him on together oh a weird draw what was bad about yesterday for
Speaker 2
20:16 - 20:18
probably their goal. That was an amazing.
Mike Dowling
20:20 - 20:37
Yeah. I know there's the efforts from behind the goal and there's lots of chance, lots of good stuff, but it was a bit flat yesterday all around. I'm not, I mean, there was some good banter between their young'uns and our young'uns, but just in general, the whole thing was a bit.
Speaker 2
20:39 - 20:43
There wasn't really much to to feel about in that game, to be honest.
Mike Dowling
20:43 - 21:06
Yeah, and that's the question that goes round and round. Is it for the fans to create the atmosphere, for the players to play up to, or the players to create something for the fans to create the atmosphere? So it's a bit of both, really. But again, it's not just the ones behind the goal doing it. It's everyone. Myself, mostly. And what was funny about the day?
Speaker 2
21:07 - 21:13
Probably when they're like, 10 fans turned up, 10 minutes late, just started giving it.
Mike Dowling
21:15 - 21:52
Yeah, that was the bit where the banter started. It was like, why are they here? And all of a sudden it was like, where's that started from? And there was a cheer. I can't remember, they started cheering them at some stage. It was random. Everyone was looking at the pitch and suddenly you lot all started cheering away. And I was like, oh, what's happened? And I realized it'd obviously been something that had happened over the other side. I don't know whether one of them had been taken out or something, I don't know. We've got two matches coming up.
Mike Dowling
21:52 - 22:30
I'm hoping to do one after the Man United game. I've got someone who may be interested in doing it, so we might have one after the Man United game. But what are your feelings on that? I mean, they've played four in this against opposition who are all higher than us, and they've beaten them all. So I think they're probably quite confident in this competition. But what are your thoughts on that? I suspect it's going to become a bit more serious now we've got to the knockout stage, where the players who play senior football will take it a bit more seriously.
Mike Dowling
22:30 - 22:31
But what do you think?
Speaker 2
22:32 - 22:45
I think, well, obviously it'd be nice to win it and for some confidence and that, but I wouldn't be too fussed if they beat us. I think it would almost be better to focus on the league and the FA Trophy.
Mike Dowling
22:46 - 22:48
Yeah, definitely the FA Trophy is...
Speaker 2
22:48 - 22:48
Yeah.
Mike Dowling
22:49 - 23:01
If you could offer it to me now, I'd be like, yeah, absolutely, we'll take that. Yeah. Do you... Do you have a prediction? Do you... Do you have thoughts what's going to happen or you just genuinely not even considered it?
Speaker 2
23:01 - 23:22
For the Manchester United game? Mm-hmm. I think they're going to be strong, obviously, because they're Manchester United. And they're going to have... good quality in the ball, otherwise they just wouldn't be there. I think it really depends what sort of side we put
Speaker 3
23:23 - 23:24
out.
Speaker 2
23:24 - 23:29
Because I don't know if we're going to want to take it more seriously now than we have been before.
Mike Dowling
23:29 - 23:30
Yeah,
Speaker 2
23:30 - 23:32
I'm not sure. I mean,
Mike Dowling
23:34 - 23:49
there is the thing, Steve didn't sound overly happy in his post-match, so you might feel he's going to put some side out that might need to play and prove themselves a bit more. I mean, one thing we do know is Des can play in that game, but he can't play.
Speaker 2
23:49 - 23:50
Yeah,
Mike Dowling
23:50 - 23:58
I think he'll play. But then the question is, you've got to play a certain number of players in that game who will play the following game. So, um...
Speaker 2
23:58 - 24:01
Isn't it? They've got to play the following game or the game before.
Mike Dowling
24:02 - 24:22
Yeah, but I'm not sure if it's the league game either. The FA Trophy might not count. I don't know. I don't know. They've made the rules up as they've kind of gone along. No one really knows what it is. Um... And then it is the big one against Spending More. Now, I don't think you guys were... I'm not sure how long you've all been supporting. I mean, how many years have you been following something?
Speaker 2
24:23 - 24:26
2016-17 season, I think.
Mike Dowling
24:26 - 24:34
Okay, so you may have had the Spinny Moor game from a couple years, a few years ago. I've heard
Speaker 2
24:34 - 24:38
people talking about it, but I think I was probably too young, I don't remember.
Mike Dowling
24:38 - 25:36
Yeah, so we lost to Bromley. in the EFA trophy and then they reported themselves for fielding an ineligible player because they realized actually that player shouldn't have played which yeah sounds funny but all good clubs would go oh damn we made a big one we've done it yeah Philip who played for Tooting and played for us and then so they got taken out of the competition we got replaced back in now the player who came on I don't think he actually had that much influence on it so we were all a little bit oh I'm not sure we should be really in this competition it doesn't seem right but we um a lot of people went up to spend more and they actually had they loved it they thought we were great with there was great time between us and them so there was a bit of friendship in fact one of their fans who lives in London I saw they just beat Kidderminster on Saturday.
Mike Dowling
25:36 - 25:45
I think it's going to be a tough game because they're going to want it just as much as us because they get to go to Wembley at the end of the day.
Speaker 2
26:02 - 26:13
I don't know how to call it. I've never watched them play, so... I think we'll be alright if we're at it and if we manage to keep a lead.

Yeah, that'd be nice. Yeah. Dare I put you for a score prediction on that one? I don't know if you've... Do you even play this prediction league or not? I haven't this

season.
Mike Dowling

No. But go on, give a prediction on that one.
Speaker 2
26:29 - 26:31
I'll be optimistic. I'll say a 1-0 win.
Mike Dowling
26:32 - 27:09
One nil win to us. OK, lovely. I'm going to go with a 3-1. I don't think we'll keep a clean sheet, but I think we'll kind of turn it on a little bit, maybe the last half an hour or so, just to make sure we get through. Do join in the prediction league. The link goes out and the message goes out every week. It never changes, but if you do want it, just give me a shout. Chalmers has built up quite a good lead at the moment, so it might be difficult to catch him. But it's eight points per week at stake, and he might forget to enter one week.

I might take him out of the email reminder. We'll see. We're going to wrap up. I know we've gone through very quickly, George, but it goes that way sometimes when you're on your own, it's a one-one draw. As always, we appreciate everyone's attention and feedback. Get involved in the Knowing Me, Knowing You segment. What changes or improvements would you like to see at the club in the next few years? 90,000-seater stadium or nice burger buns? I don't know, whichever. Follow, like, and share this episode at Sutton Podcast on social medias. subscribe, give me the thumbs up with the ego boost, and we hopefully will be back after the Man United match, but if not, we'll definitely be back after the Spending Wall match.

As always, thank you to lucky star Jin, and a big thank you to George for going alone. You're more than welcome, mate. Otherwise, I would have been sitting here talking at my own. That would have been a nightmare. Thanks, everyone, for listening. I hope you've enjoyed this episode of Sutton Podcast. Take care, and we'll catch up soon. Oh, one last thing. There's many more matches, sorry, is the collection for the Paul Allen Foundation. So make sure you bring some Dosh with you on Saturday, and you can go in the buckets. So yes, thank you all for listening.
