Don't Tell The Kids with Jenny & Neil | Wealdstone v Sutton United

Hello and welcome to another episode of the Sutton United Talk Time Podcast, brought to you by Lucky Star Gin. I’m your host, Mike, and joining me on the panel today are Jenny and Neil. Together, we'll be diving into Sutton United's recent trip to Wealdstone, where the U's managed to scrape out a hard-fought 1-0 victory. We'll also be looking ahead to the upcoming fixture against York City, so stick around!

First Half: Expectations vs Reality

Let’s kick things off with the lineup. After a 5-0 thrashing in the previous game, you might expect Steve to stick with a winning formula. But in true Sutton fashion, he shook things up with five changes. Neil, I bet you were as surprised as I was?

Neil shared his thoughts, expecting a more or less unchanged side, only to be thrown a curveball with all the changes. Jenny, on the other hand, was still wrapping her head around the new team dynamics, especially with so many fresh faces.

As the game began, it was clear Sutton were full of energy, pressing high and fast. It’s becoming our trademark, isn’t it? Neil highlighted standout performances from Jaden Harris and Jeremy Sivi, while Jenny agreed that while it wasn’t the most spectacular football, the team’s fitness and commitment were on full display.

And then, the goal came. A beauty, even if neither Jenny nor Neil had the best view from their vantage point. When they saw the replay, though, the consensus was clear—what a strike! Neil described it as one of those perfectly timed moments that make all the difference in a game.

Second Half: Holding On for Dear Life

But let’s be honest—if the first half was about energy and pressing, the second half was about nerves. Wealdstone came out fighting, and suddenly, it felt like last season all over again, with the opposition knocking on the door. Jenny admitted to feeling those old familiar jitters, wondering when, not if, Wealdstone would equalize. But there was something different this time—confidence.

Neil mentioned how, despite the pressure, the team didn’t crumble like they might have last year. A lot of that confidence came from Steve Arnold, who was once again immense in goal, making some crucial saves to keep Wealdstone at bay. His calm, assured presence made all the difference, even as the team was pushed further and further back.

By the time the final whistle blew, it wasn’t just relief we felt—it was a sense of pride. Sure, it wasn’t pretty, but it was effective. Jenny summed it up nicely: sometimes, you just have to grind out these results if you want to be in the promotion mix. Neil added that wins like this, where you have to dig deep, are what build character in a team.

Looking Ahead: York City on the Horizon

Next up is York City, and it’s shaping up to be a cracker. Both teams have seven points from nine, so something’s got to give. Neil is optimistic, predicting a 2-1 win for the U’s, while Jenny is backing the team to keep a clean sheet with a 2-0 victory. It’s early days, but with the team starting to gel, there’s plenty to be excited about.

So, what did you make of the game? Do you agree with Steve’s lineup changes? What are your predictions for the York match? We’d love to hear from you—drop us a message on social media.

Final Thoughts: The Good, The Bad, and The Funny

Before we wrap up, let’s quickly do our good, bad, and funny moments. Neil’s “good” was the fantastic support from the Amber Army, while Jenny’s “bad” was that heart-stopping moment when Steve Arnold had to juggle and punch the ball away to save the day. As for the funny, it has to be Neil’s encounter with a group of Sutton fans at Farringdon Station, who started chanting his name in the middle of rush hour!

And that’s all for today’s episode. Thanks to Jenny and Neil for joining me, and thank you, our listeners, for tuning in. Don’t forget to like, share, and follow the Sutton United Talk Time Podcast on all social media platforms. Until next time, keep the faith, and come on, you U’s!
