I Don’t Want To Be 2-0 Up with Sarah & Rory

Hello & welcome to another episode of Sutton United Talk Time on Podcast, the Sutton Podcast.

In this episode I’m joined by Sarah and Rory to break down three away matches in the National League: trips to Yeovil Town F.C., FC Halifax Town, and Hartlepool United F.C..

Sarah and Rory both made the journeys north, bringing first-hand perspective from the terraces, while I watched events unfold from afar.

Across the three matches we saw everything from frustrating defensive mistakes to a performance full of grit, smart substitutions and moments of real quality. Most importantly, Sutton came away with four points from three difficult away fixtures.

Episode Highlights

Yeovil: Control… then collapse

The Yeovil match summed up one of Sutton’s recurring themes this season. For much of the game, the team played well and looked comfortable.

But concentration slipped late on.

Sarah described the frustration clearly, pointing to “really dull mistakes” that cost the team.

Giving away penalties has become an unfortunate pattern and once again it proved costly. Despite controlling large parts of the game, Sutton allowed Yeovil back into the match.

Halifax: Character and resilience

Against Halifax the mood shifted.

From the opening minutes Sutton looked sharper and more determined. Rory felt the players were clearly trying to respond after the disappointment at Yeovil.

Even when the game swung back and forth, Sutton showed real resilience.

Good substitutions and persistence meant the team never gave up, and the performance reinforced something Sutton fans have seen before. When the opposition is strong, Sutton often raise their level.

Hartlepool: A proper away performance

The trip to Hartlepool delivered the highlight of the week.

Facing a confident side who expected three points, Sutton produced a disciplined and impressive display.

Defensively the team were outstanding. One moment in particular stood out as 18-year-old Junior produced a remarkable recovery tackle that prevented a certain goal just before half-time.

As Rory noted, that moment changed the momentum of the game.

From there Sutton built confidence and eventually sealed the win with a brilliant strike that capped a flowing move.

Guest Insights and Interactions

Throughout the episode, Sarah and Rory offered a fan’s view of the bigger picture.

One recurring theme was Sutton’s curious tendency to perform well against stronger sides while sometimes dropping points against teams lower in the table.

Sarah pointed out that this could simply be perception.

When the pattern fits the narrative, we notice it more.

Rory highlighted something more encouraging: the team’s resilience and the increasing impact of substitutes late in games.

Both agreed that the squad is showing signs of improvement and growing belief.

Key Quotes

“I said something didn’t I… I don’t want to be 2–0 up.”
Sarah

That line perfectly captured the mix of humour and nervousness that Sutton fans often feel when watching their team.

Other notable moments included:

“We played so well for 90 minutes but just couldn’t get over the line.” – Rory

“Some really dull mistakes… and we’ve got to put our hands up.” – Sarah

“It’s ridiculous how much we rely on an 18-year-old.” – discussion about Junior’s outstanding defensive performance.
