It Was Rigged with Lucy Clark

In this episode of Sutton Podcast, Lucy Clark opens up about goalkeeping chaos, unity under pressure, and a bold vision for Sutton United Women.

What do you do when your name magically comes out of the hat first? You sing.

That’s what happened to Lucy Clark, Sutton United Women’s manager, when the squad introduced a new matchday tradition. She swears it was fixed, but the moment was symbolic. As Lucy said, “United we stand” - and that’s the heart of this episode.

In this lively and honest chat, Lucy joins Mike to review last season, unpack the challenges, and share what’s next for the women’s side at Sutton United.

Season of Chaos and Progress

Lucy dubs it “the year of the goalkeeper,” and not without reason. With injuries, departures, and even midfielders in goal, the team scrambled to stay afloat. Despite all that, the numbers speak for themselves:

  • Goal difference improved from -47 to -3

  • More than double the goals scored

  • More wins, more points, better performances

Cup runs were bittersweet. The FA Cup exit on penalties stung, but the squad made the semifinals and quarterfinals elsewhere. And in the league, the team grew stronger as players returned from injury.

When Unity Matters Most

The episode touches on a difficult moment in the club’s season - the public reaction to a trans player’s involvement. Lucy doesn’t dwell on the drama, but she does share how the team responded:

“It probably made them a bit of a stronger group... they were unified.”

Players rallied behind each other, ready to play and support one another. Lucy makes clear there was no internal divide, only solidarity.

Back in the Borough and Building Anew

This season, Sutton United Women are moving home to the David Weir Leisure Centre. Last season’s host, Chipstead, was welcoming, but difficult to access. Being back in the borough means better support and better facilities - including training on grass, gym access, and a pitch managed by the same team as Gander Green Lane.

On the pitch, there’s reason to be excited. New signings like Amy Warren, Ellie Moon, and 16-year-old Phoebe Langley bring both experience and potential. The newly renamed Development Team is also looking strong, with young talent stepping up.

Looking Ahead

With Fulham out of the division and strong teams like Dartford and Brentford in, Lucy is optimistic:

“Ultimately we want to win the league… and get into the National League.”

The five-year plan includes:

  • At least one promotion, maybe two

  • Regular matches at Gander Green Lane

  • A serious FA Cup run

If the squad stays fit and consistent, she believes they’ll be in the mix.

Key Takeaways

  1. Last season was tough, but the team grew stronger.

  2. The squad is united, with new energy and leadership.

  3. Support matters - now is the time to get behind them.
