Some podcast episodes are tied to a particular moment.
Others tell the story of a football club.
Originally released in June 2022, this conversation with former Sutton United chairman Dave F. is one of those episodes. While some of the operational detail belongs to the time it was recorded, the stories, memories and lessons behind them are just as fascinating today.
If you’ve ever wondered how Sutton United became the club it is, this is a great place to start.
Dave has spent more than 50 years supporting Sutton United. He served around 35 seasons on the committee, 12 years with the supporters’ club and more than a decade as chairman before stepping aside to allow the club to continue evolving. Even now, he’s still playing an important role, helping to lead the club’s sustainability work and coordinating projects for Sutton United’s 125th anniversary.
That depth of experience makes for a conversation unlike many others.
We look back at some of the defining moments in Sutton’s history, from the Anglo-Italian Cup triumph in Italy and the famous FA Cup runs of the late 1980s, through to the extraordinary rise under Paul Doswell and the promotion-winning era under Matt Gray.
But this isn’t simply a trip down memory lane.
It’s an opportunity to understand the decisions that shaped the football club behind the scenes.
Dave explains how the famous £99 season ticket came about and why it transformed attendances at Gander Green Lane. We discuss the thinking behind installing a 3G pitch, not just for the first team, but for the benefit of the academy, women’s football and the wider community. He also shares what it was like preparing for one of the biggest matches in the club’s history as Sutton welcomed Arsenal in the FA Cup, and the logistical challenge that came with suddenly becoming the focus of the football world.
There are brilliant stories throughout the conversation.
Player registrations completed in motorway service stations to beat transfer deadlines. The friendships between supporters and players that continued long after careers had ended. The frantic work that went into keeping the club running during the COVID pandemic. And the countless decisions that supporters rarely see but which help determine the future of a football club.
More than anything, though, this episode is about people.
One of the themes that runs throughout our conversation is the importance of volunteers. Long before Sutton reached the Football League, and long after the television cameras packed away, volunteers remained the heartbeat of the club. They gave up evenings, weekends and holidays because they believed in Sutton United and wanted to leave it in a better place than they found it.
As football became more professional, that presented new challenges. The club needed commercial expertise, digital skills and new ways of thinking, while still protecting the community spirit that had always made Sutton different. Dave talks openly about refreshing the board, bringing in new expertise and recognising when it was the right time for someone else to lead.
It’s an honest conversation about leadership, succession and understanding that a football club should always be bigger than any one individual.
Listening back today, some names have changed, some projects have moved on and Sutton United has entered another chapter of its history.
What hasn’t changed is the message at the heart of this episode.
Football clubs aren’t built by eleven players alone.
They’re built by volunteers, supporters, staff, directors and countless people working quietly behind the scenes, often without recognition, simply because they care.
If you’ve never listened to this episode before, I hope you’ll discover something new about Sutton United.
And if you heard it when it was first released back in June 2022, I think you’ll appreciate it even more with the benefit of hindsight.
